6 Steps to writing a successful dissertation as a PhD student

For PhD students, the final desired outcome is their dissertation.

Writing a dissertation is a painful process. No less painful than giving birth to a baby. For that reason, any tips or tricks that help ease this process is well-appreciated.

Here are six steps that are designed to help write a dissertation successfully:

#1. Focus on one task at a time.

Break down the writing into smaller tasks. Focus on one task at a time giving it undivided attention.

#2. Don’t multitask.

Multitasking is a myth. This notion is particularly true for research that demands one to think, process and make connections 365 days, 24 X 7.

#3. Different kinds of tasks require different types of attention. Allocate the right sort of attention according to the task at hand.

Writing a dissertation involves various tasks such as data collection, analysis, literature review, writing and proofreading. All the above functions don’t require the same kind of focus. Rationing attention according to the task at hand helps optimize both effort and time.

#4. Give yourself flexibility and permission to learn. Don’t be rigid with your plans.

Calendar-blocking time for dissertation is excellent. However, blocking time for specific tasks makes the structure rigid, not giving enough freedom to flow with the creative process of thinking.

#5. Don’t let thoughts linger on tasks. Externalize them.

For every small task of the project, putting down the outcome of thinking involved with the possible connections will help externalize the tasks. This externalization will free up mental space giving more space for the actual thinking process.

#6. Limit the use for willpower or motivation.

Having a routine and meals prepped can limit the number of decisions one needs to make since research involves many choices. It is highly recommended to schedule breaks as well.
